When you get your body piercing, one of the important things you will be told about is how to take care of your piercing. Let us talk about saline solution, which helps your piercing heal quickly!
Saline solution is basically salt water. But wait – it is not table salt and water; it is made using salt without iodine since iodine can irritate your body piercing. So you will need iodine-free salt. Your piercer will probably tell you to use sterile, preservative free saline solution available in a spray can which you can use to clean your piercing. There are quite a few brands of such saline solutions out there, by the way – H2Ocean, Easypiercing and others.
Among the packaged saline solution products you will find some without additives and some with non-iodized sea salt mixtures. These come in metal cans, so the chances of contamination are minimized. Most of them contain additives that make the body comfortable.
Saline solution is meant to be used to clean your body piercing and make it heal faster. You soak a bud of cotton wool in the saline solution and then hold it against the piercing. This costs less than other products and can be very soothing, helping your piercing heal quickly. Depending on where you have your body piercing, saline solution can also be used to clean out the crusty matter.
In the course of a day, it is recommended that you use a saline soak at most twice, for a few minutes each time. One way to do it is to invert a cup of warm saline solution on top of the piercing, cupping it. With some piercings this may not be possible, so you may want to soak some clean gauze in the saline solution and hold it against the piercing. Rinse the area after this to remove any crusty stuff.
If you want to make your own saline solution, you can mix a one third teaspoon of sea salt in a cup of warm distilled or boiled cooled water. Just don’t make it too strong or it might irritate the piercing. Sea salt is available at most drugstores, by the way. You just have to look for the low iodine or iodine-free type! 😉
