Microdermal Piercing – An Exciting New Trend In Body Piercing!

Microdermal piercings are permanent body piercings. You will also hear them referred to as dermal anchoring or microdermal implants.
Microdermals look pleasing and aesthetic and are rapidly becoming very popular. They are considered a cool alternative to surface body piercing because they are permanent. They are quick and convenient.
The technique and size is also so easy that you can have it done practically anywhere on your body. No special tools are required and the procedure is less invasive than an implant. The process is also more comfortable compared to the transdermal or sub dermal implants.
What Does The Process Of Microdermal Piercing Involve?
This basically involves a single piercing on the body where only the one part of the jewelry is visible on the skin’s surface. The other part is just under the skin, held in place by a titanium plate, which has many holes in it so that the tissue may grow through it, nicely anchoring your jewelry. To avoid any risks of rejection steel is usually not used.
The piercer usually cleans and marks the area to be pierced. The part to be pierced is pinched up and a 1.5 dermal punch is deftly inserted into the skin, straight down. After the hole is made, the piercer fixes the microdermal quickly. The whole thing barely takes an hour right from the time you arrive at the piercer to the time you are through!
Even though the titanium plate stays under your skin once you get the microdermal piercing done, you can change the visible part of this jewelry after a couple of months.
What Jewelry Can You Wear?
You will find a variety of jewelry to suit this type of body piercing ranging from acrylic, gemstones and plenty more although titanium is the most advisable.
You need to be over eighteen and have a photo id to get a microdermal.
As with any body piercing, once the microdermal is done, your piercer will give you the appropriate care instructions. In spite of being a new kind of body piercing many people are going in for microdermals. Rejection of the piercing is quite rare when done properly. Healing takes approximately one to three months depending on the individual getting pierced.

i have 1 anchor. right in the middle of my chest, right below the middle of my collar bone. i got it done like a year ago. i love it. but its for the hardcore only because its very permanent, unless you rip it out & have a nasty scar because of it. But yes, people are going a bit crazy with them, but they will regret it later.
Sarahhhhh on Wed, 13th May 2009 5:25 am
I have one
its on my wrist and i think its super cool!
I dont know what country this article was written in but im only 16 in Australia and i got mine done just the other day…
Also 1 hour to get it done??? i went to a very reputable piercer and it took maybe 5 minutes… 10 minutes tops but thats it. They just punched the skin, put in the jewellery, bandaged me up and i was ready to go
Leisa on Wed, 13th May 2009 4:51 pm
I was wondering if it is possible to get them done on your tongue, i know you said everywhere but i just wanted to ask, i love them! and thought maybe they would be a better alternative to a surface piercing on my tongue?? So possible or??
Amanda on Mon, 18th May 2009 1:15 pm
I don’t have any dermals yet but I think that if the placement is good and it’s not over the top they are beautiful. They are like tattoos, some people can pull them off some just look wrong but if you have a good piercer and take care of them properly they look quite tasteful. I want to get one on my cheek just under my eye. I think though that I will get two on my collar bone before I’ll be brave enough to try one in my face.

Well I have a implant near my eye n I love it but when I read that it perminet it kind of scared me but it looks mad cute my piercer is the man shout out to jav…..he told me it can be removed but only by him bcuz he knows the teqnique to take it out some1 else would leave me a scar
piercing worry wart on Sun, 21st Jun 2009 8:42 am
how would you get the plate removed? and is der a ugly scar after? do you noe were i can get pictures? and i was thinking about doing 2 on my lower back were back dimples usually are but i plan on having kids in the future idk if that would affect that with epedoral (how eva yu spell it) and its jus dangerous is general seeing its on my back if anything goes wrong i can stay paralized.! yikes i need advice
Kat on Wed, 1st Jul 2009 8:43 am
A microdermal piercing wouldn’t affect your movement at all. It’s placed right under the skin, so there is no risk of damaging the spinal cord, which is where an epidural block is placed.
So, microdermal piercings REALLY can’t lead to paralysis – but if that’s a worry at all, I think you need to do plenty more research before you as much as think of getting a piercing.

i want to get one on my finger but the perminant thing scares me. ill probably still get it. supposibly its permanent beecaus of the holes in the anchor but if you look around on the web you see anchorswith out the holes. is it not a good idea to get one like that? will it wiggle around or something?

Justin, I am thinking of getting the same thing done except on my back. is it recommended to get the tatto done first then the eyes, or the other way around. also, i have read that some of them the tops are interchangeable. im thinking about switching between rubys and diamonds for the eyes. lastly, can they be implanted to where they are flush with the surface of the skin? just wondering.
A piercer on Tue, 1st Sep 2009 7:49 pm
Hey everyone. Microdermals ARE NOT PERMANENT. They are a semi permanent piercing that can be removed by a qualified professional. I have removed quite a few and it is not hard. I had to remove all 8 of mine just a few weeks back due to an operation.
Dana on Tue, 8th Sep 2009 8:56 pm
I got two on the opposite sides of my chest, just below my collar bone. The actual procedure wasn’t too painful and took maybe 10 minutes with prep and all, but I’ve had mine since July and just yesterday I snagged the left one on my shirt and it ripped out half-way, I pushed it back in and put a band-aid over it. I’m going to see my piercer today but I’m pretty scared, hopefully it will turn out ok. It’s really easy to snag these and it hurst like a bitch when you do, be sure it’s something you really want. They ARE permanent.
Diana on Sat, 12th Sep 2009 12:18 pm
I got 2 dermals by Tee at krazykatskc.com (Charlotte NC that’s how I found them online) and I swear it felt like a very sharp pinch done twice. It has been 2 months and I have no problem with it whatsoever. Just be sure your piercer has done it before and had healing pictures to show (my piercer has several healing dermals she has done by herself) Go for it, they are so worth it!

jorie on Sun, 27th Sep 2009 2:46 pm
this article is wrong on a few fronts..first of all they’re not permanent and they’re not hard core. it also doesnt take anywhere near an hour..mine took about 30 seconds to actually pierce if that. not bad at all.
Chelsea on Mon, 28th Sep 2009 9:20 am
I have my back dimples pierced with dermals and I absolutely love them! Only a week old and there is hardly any swelling. Pretty painful…totally worth it. Dermals aren’t permanent, but my piercer told me the removal is painful.

I have so many piercings lined up that I am planning on getting: Navel, industrian, lip, eyebrow and my ears a few more times. And now I;m adding one microdermal on each side of my hips. So far all i have in my nose and my ears 4 times so I havent gotten any serious stuff done. but I have heard that microdermals are a lot less painful and less hassel than regular surface piercings so I think they will be very worth it. Plus they just look so sexy.

how much does it cost to get this done?
KayPierced on Mon, 12th Oct 2009 4:30 pm
It depends where you go. I know a place that does it $65 for the first one and $35 for everyone afterwards. The place I got mine done was having a fall special where it was buy one got one half off and they were only $50 per dermal. So it all depends where you go.

So I have an existing scar from my monroe piercing and I want to get a microdermal to replace it in the same place through the scar tissue any suggestions? I was told no by two piercers and yes by two piercers in my area. I have had lots of piercings over the last 15 plus years and have had great luck with all. Except of course the damage to gums due to oral piercings. These however are new to me. Any comments?
ace on Fri, 13th Nov 2009 9:43 pm
be careful piercing your nape, dermal or surface, if your hair covers it. it will be forever wrapped around it, and it hurts, gets infected, and in my case, taken out! Just a warning spoken from experience, it was a very sad day when I took my surface ones out, but I wasn’t willing to cut my hair to keep them!

I actually just got a dermal in my ring finger (by jess@luckystartattoo san jose,ca) and it wasnt even as painful as my septum which was by far the worst pain i had out of all piercing, the whole permanant thing i dont really see a problem with, its beautiful id never want to take it out.

I want to get microdermals right by my clavicles but Im afraid of how much it will hurt. Can anyone compare the pain to maybe a tongue piercing or bellybutton?
Emily on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 6:38 pm
I had a microdermal right under my eye for about a year and a half, until 2 days back when I was waking up caught it on my ring and out it came anchor and all.
No it did not hurt that much, minimal bleeding, I’m just trying to take care of the scar at the moment see how it looks in a few days…
then maybe see if I can get it put back in the same spot I miss that Little diamond:D

Well, I got right above my shoulder blades done, just below my neck. It was painful. Apparently, because it is all muscle and less fatty tissue he warned me it would be painful. 2 Weeks afterwards, it became infected and got very loose. I began the regime of sea salt water cleaning and keeping it bandaged with a latex free bandaid (am allergic to latex). It has tightened back up and is not infected anymore. However, I am feeling a “tugging” or “pulling” in it currently. He has reccommended me keeping it bandaged for at least another month. I got it done October 10th. t is quite lovely, and I look forward to when it is completely healed and I can show it off.
Sarah on Tue, 1st Dec 2009 6:00 pm
I recently got two implants just below my collar bones. In comparison to the pain, I would say they are closer to the pain of a nose or tragus piercing. I think this is only due to the stretching they do the get the implant under your skin….usually flesh piercings arent too bad. The pain is very quick and they are so worth it!!
Shawn on Wed, 9th Dec 2009 12:46 am
here are quite a few dermals if anybody cares to see, i believe there are a few hundred here i have done. thanks

Dermals are suppose to be looked at as permanent because your skin grows into the plate, and you have to have them cut out. A tattoo isn’t exactly permanent, if you look at it the same as a dermal. You can get a tattoo removed as well.
I’m getting mine done tomorrow, two below the clavicle. I’m super excited, super nervous, and so on.
anon on Sat, 19th Dec 2009 12:43 pm
I’ve had my nape done for 9 months now, I’m a girl with really long hair that i always brush and over the 9 months I’ve only caught it about 4 times, but nothing bad. It’s more of a ‘oh no! what if it came out?’ Rather than an ‘ouch!’ doesn’t really hurt, just scares me that its fallen out! I also always wear a necklace which falls just below it, and it doesn’t interfere.
Didn’t hurt at all when I got it put in, if i had to describe it I would say it felt a bit like an injection? But once the jewelry was in, I didn’t feel a thing. It was a bit red for a few hours, but after a day the redness had completely gone. I took good care of it and it is perfectly fine. It will be a very sad day if I have to have it taken out! Thinking of getting another, but trying to think of a place that won’t be easily caught on anything
I want one where I can see it without looking in two mirrors!

I am going to get my clavicle done on both sides. I am nervous about the pain. I have my tongue, belly button and conch pierced. I also have 7 tattoos (three on my back, two on my hips, one on my forearm, one on my hand) Do they hurt as much as those? My tongue hurt the most out of all of them,,, do the dermals hurt as much? I can obv. handle the pain but im still a little nervous. Ive done a lot of research so im absolutely sure that i want this done. so whats the pain like?1

Yesterday I got my nape done and my anti-eyebrow with these. My neck looks super cute.I am still getting used to the ones under my eye but they look nice.
It really doesnt hurt really at all! It only hurt a little cause for one of them she had troubles getting it in.
Does anyone know where you can get small jewllery for it? The place I got them done had a limited stock and I would like smaller jewllery for my anti-eyebrow. Is it possible to get smaller ones?
stacey on Sun, 10th Jan 2010 3:39 am
i have a appointment with my piercer next saturday to get my first micro on my chest im pretty excited about it
although i am slightly worried about catching it, but i will have to just be extra careful, im not a hardcore piercing entusiast, i have my lip tongue and tragus done, and i dont think you have to be hardcore to get this done as long as you get it done tastefully where it’ll look good, even when the ‘trend’ has passed.
Ali on Tue, 12th Jan 2010 8:13 pm
I LOVE THESE!!! I have many tattoos and piercings but all are very tasteful and classy. Im not a punk…just a beautiful girl with beautiful body art. I got my first micro today it is on the back of my neck. I am going back TOMORROW to get two more done to make it a cluster. I think it is beautiful. I would never get any type of piercing on my face however, and I already have my tongue pierced but if I didnt I wouldnt get a micro on my tongue….better to get the traditional tongue piercing I think….
Ali on Tue, 12th Jan 2010 8:18 pm
Dont know if I would get one of these if my body had rejected previous piercings…..I would be too nervous. I think some people have body’s that just dont want to be pierced. If you find a good tattoo artist they can tattoo something on your body that looks like a diamond.
Katelynn on Mon, 18th Jan 2010 12:04 am
well, i have two underneath my collar bones. didnt hurt a bit and it took like maybe around 20 minuites for both of them. if it takes an hour then you went to someone who does not know what they are doing. and there not permanent. if you do not want them anymore then you just go to the place you got them done at and get them taken out. simple as that. and you can even change the diamond. pretty cute. to me its better than a tattoo. because you can always have these taken out in the future. you can not remove a tattoo as easy as these. and it doesnt even leave a bad scar. like a pin needle

I got my nape done a week ago and I love it! I havent caught it on anything… yet! I have long hair and expect to get it caught sometime soon
Getting it done didn’t hurt that much and I was super nervous, you feel the needle (or punch) and then theres some pulling and movement, it stings but its nothing that makes you want to stop. Mine didnt bleed much and Ive had no problem with it. Ive been washing it twice a day with sea salt and boiling water and its fine, one day of redness and itching but a hot shower sorted it out!
Id def recommend them to anyone, hardcore piercing fan or not! They are pretty and cool and if you ever want them out you go back to your piercer and they remove it… no hassle!
I do know someone with 2 on her wrist but I think I would just catch then in my pockets.
I want to get more so I dont have to stand with 2 mirrors just to look at it!!! Thinking about getting 3 done at the bottom of my neck -clavical?
Enjoy your Microdermals!!!!

I just went to club tattoo yesterday for four piercings (Mercedez does them for me most the time). Got my sternum pierced with a dermal, my abdomen on either side with surface piercings, and then my hood. All these piercings were minor in pain, the worst one was my microdermal under my right eye. Piercings are nothing to be frightened about.
ALy on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 3:34 pm
My main concern was if they could be removed.. I just learned that they can’t
I’m not very happy about that. I was kidna actually donsidering them for my birthday.
I really don’t want to have anything permenant on me.
Ivory on Sat, 6th Feb 2010 2:19 pm
They are permanent in the sense that you can’t take it off yourself but hardly as permanent as a tattoo. I’ve personally had three of them, one of which is still in place. The first one was behind my ear and got caught on a towel after showering and one of its legs came out. My piercer was able to take it out simply with a small nudge. Apparently the skin hadn’t grown properly through the holes in the base.
I had the second one on my finger, which is quite a terrible place to heal properly. I had it in for almost 9 months but it got infected and had to be taken out. A minor operation, about the same amount of pain as putting it in.
The third one is above one of my brows, about half a year old.
Neither of the two that were removed left a bad scar and I’m thinking of giving the finger a second shot. I’m still careful about that spot and it feels like there’s something missing.
