“If My Piercing Starts To Bleed, Changes Color Or Gets Bruised And Swollen, Do I Definitely Have An Infection?”

Body Piercing InfectionNow wait a minute. If there ever was a hasty conclusion, then this is it! :-)

Bleeding a bit, getting discolored, a little bruising, some swelling – all these are natural outcomes of a new piercing.

Let’s see – you get a nose piercing done. Your piercer will use a clamp – and obviously your skin will bruise a bit. Any kind of puncture can cause redness and a skin piercing is no different.

Do you worry when you scrape your knee and it bleeds, swells a little and then changes color as it heals? Obviously not, and this is simply because that is how all wounds heal naturally. So it is the same with your body piercing.

Piercing will cause swelling around the area, which will subside as the healing begins. Sometimes you might see a whitish yellow fluid coming out from around the piercing. This is also absolutely normal because when the piercing is made, the body finds a way to push out the dead cells in the area.

If you are thinking of pus, then that is entirely different. Okay – so your piercing is going to be a little sore for a while. That will pass too. When the jewelry is inserted into the piercing, there might be a little irritation, swelling and pain. That is a normal reaction of our body to adjust to a foreign object. As the healing progresses, the irritation, swelling and pain subside.

Just don’t do anything weird – like trying to remove the jewelry without first consulting your piercer! ;-)
